Hurricane Richard tears through the Belize Zoo

The Belize Zoo and Tropical Education Center, where we’ve lead Earth Expeditions courses for several years now, was directly hit by Hurricane Richard, which made landfall in Belize on October 23. Fortunately none of the staff or animals suffered any casualties, but many of their natural tropical exhibits were severely damaged. As a result, the Zoo is closed while they rebuild. You can some of the devastating photos at http://www.flickr.com/photos/epmallory3/sets/72157625289811738/with/5136725016/ .

This amazing little zoo does great things for the people and wildlife of Belize. It receives no funds from the government, relying on the generosity of its members and donors. I encourage anyone who is so inclined to support the Belize Zoo in rebuilding by donating to their Hurricane Relief Fund at https://host176.hostmonster.com/~nplhostc/belizezoo/index.php?option=com_wrapper&view=wrapper&Itemid=145 .
